Are Locks and Keys as We Know Them Going to Become a Thing of the Past?

As technology moves forward at an ever-increasing pace, keys are becoming more and more obsolete. Technologies that were once only science fiction are being sold to businesses and homeowners alike.

Touchpads are Everywhere

Digital locks that use a keypad like a touch-tone telephone are available for almost every application. Locks are also being operated with magnetic stripe cards. Stay in some hotels and you will have a safe in your room that reads the data on the back of your credit card or ATM. It doesn't use the card to charge you; it uses the data to verify your identity when you come back to access the safe. Many of us have small transmitters that allow us to unlock the doors on our cars without a key. Now you can get a handle set for the front door of your home that uses the same type of transmitter to provide keyless access.

Change is a Constant

Locks will never go away. Security has been important since prehistoric times and will continue to be so for a long time. Keys, however, are changing. As technology advances, locksmiths must provide products that allow their customers to easily gain access while maintaining a secure environment. Bottom line, you'll always need keys - we just can't guarantee what they will look like!
